The UK already has a system of producer responsibility set out in the packaging regulations, where business that produced or handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging and have a turnover of more than £2 million must comply with the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations. These regulations require companies to finance the recovery and recycling of packaging materials in proportion to the amount they have placed on the market and have been established for the past 24 years.
However, these regulations do not cover the full net cost of disposal, collection and treatment of packaging.
Extended Producer Responsibility is only one part of the Government’s plan to reform the UK Packaging Waste Regulations. As a result of the reform, your business may also be affected by The Plastic Packaging Tax or Deposit Return Schemes. Use the buttons below to find out more information.
