Clarity Cares: Clarity team go the distance for charity

In September, we encouraged our employees to commit to a physical challenge to raise money and awareness for charity, whilst supporting their physical and mental wellbeing.

We are on a mission to be a good business that does good, and have committed to donating 1% of our profits to charity each year. Our team have embraced this mission, often undertaking sponsored activities throughout the year to raise money for charities that mean something to them. Last year these challenges included litter picking the equivalent distance of Brighton to Lands’ End, walking 50km, and cycling from London to Brighton.

Unfortunately, 2020 has seen most fundraising events cancelled or postponed due to the restrictions in place to stop the spread of Covid-19. This year has been a hugely difficult one for charities, many of whom rely on sponsorship money, plus the added disappointment for those who have spent time training and preparing for events. Digital alternatives have allowed people to get involved remotely,  providing much-needed funding for worthy causes.

This September we encouraged our team to pick an online fundraising challenge that would benefit a charity of their choosing, keeping us all moving into autumn and maintaining our physical and mental wellbeing.

Two members of the Clarity packaging team, Martin Trigg-Knight, head of packaging and Sam Caplan, business development executive, chose to undertake a mammoth cycling challenge in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK. They managed to complete the Cycle 300 over the month, fitting in huge distances at weekends, before and after work.

Sam Caplen, said of the challenge: “Having a challenge to work towards really motivated me to get on my bike most days. I am an avid mountain biker, but to get this large volume of miles under my belt I had to loan out a road bike from a friend. It ended up being far tougher than I anticipated, especially being done remotely, under my own persistence, but it was a great achievement for an amazing charity.”

In addition to the cycling challenge, we also had six members of our team, from across divisions, complete the Marsden marathon. Completing a marathon distance over the course of the month, Alec, Charlotte, Elaine, Ewa, Hayley and Lucy each ran 26.2 miles, cumulatively covering just over 130 miles in September.

Lucy Brooks, head of communications at Clarity Environmental, was pleased to have a challenge to undertake while raising some money: “After lockdown, we were in no position to run a half marathon in one go, let alone a full one. So this challenge was perfect for us as it got us outside and active as the summer drew to a close. The virtual event meant we could fundraise for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, helping to support their life saving research and amazing care they provide for cancer patients and their families. It was great to do this virtually with our colleagues and, as always, wonderful to be supported by Clarity to do something good whilst also looking after our own wellbeing.”

In 2018, Clarity Environmental formalised a commitment to corporate social responsibility by creating the Clarity Cares programme. This is our promise to donate profits to good causes. Supported by the year-on-year growth, Clarity Environmental donated over £50,000 in 2019.
